It has been some time since we last heard news regarding the Cause for the Beatification and Canonization of the Servant of God Father Augustus Tolton, the first publicly recognized black priest in the United States of America. The lack of news, however, does not meant that the Tolton Guild is not continuing its efforts to further the cause of Quincy's first citizen.
His Excellency the Most Reverend Joseph N. Perry, Auxiliary Bishop of Chicago and Diocesan Postulator of the Cause, recently noted that the life of Father Tolton "deserves a much wider audience even now, as it is a unique narrative in the seldom heralded epic of African American Catholicism."
To this end, Liturgy Training Publications has published a graphic novel - what formerly would have been called a comic book - titled Father Augustus Tolton: The First Recognized Black Priest in America by Corinna Laughlin and Maria Laughlin.
If you are looking for a way to celebrate Black Catholic History Month this November, this graphic novel might be a useful way to delve into the intriguing story of Father Gus' life and ministry in Quincy and in Chicago with your students and family.
Our diocese came Out with a graphic novel depicting the history of the founding of our diocese.

And my brother got them the action bible- a graphic novel type bible. It's like the bible on steroids is how I would describe it.
Anyhow- thanks for sharing this! I think we will try and have our own collection of Catholic comic books!
