Additional evidence of the stupidity of selfies?

It seems that my great dislike - even disgust - of selfies has found another justification, this time from shoplifting Italian teenagers:
The first teenager was tracked down and the three were taken in for questioning by police, where they made the audacious request for a selfie with police officers as a souvenir of their first arrest.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, police did not grant their request. The three face charges for shoplifting [more].
I'm tempted to ask if taking selfies makes people stupid, or if it's the other round, but it's an answer that I probably don't to know.
